Taking A Closer Look At The Growing Trend of Momcations

By Moureen N

Moms, who bear the weight of numerous responsibilities daily, often find the idea of a vacation akin to winning the lottery—a distant dream. Recognizing the need for respite, hotels and resorts are now introducing packages tailored explicitly for busy moms, giving rise to a new travel trend known as the “momcation.” This emerging trend presents an opportunity for mothers to escape, unwind, and recharge without the constant demands of parenting.

Momcation has become a prevalent hashtag on social media, with mothers sharing glimpses of their solo or mom-only adventures. The essence of a momcation lies in allowing spouses and children to manage on their own while mothers revel in some much-needed time to themselves, embracing activities of their choice. Brandy Ferner, a novelist and mother of a 6-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy, advocates for these getaways, emphasizing the simplicity of having uninterrupted time. She describes her moms-only trips as checking into a hotel for a long weekend, ordering room service, and indulging in TV binges—an essential luxury often taken for granted by those without children.

The appeal of momcations lies in their rejuvenating experience and the variety of packages available at different price points. The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, California, offers a high-end “Mom-cation” package for $745 a night. It includes a branded bathrobe to take home, a $50 spa credit, a complimentary “Mom Juice” bottle in white, red, or sparkling wine, and a “Guilt be Gone” bath bomb.
On the more budget-friendly side, boutique chain Archer Hotel provides momcation packages at several locations, with prices as low as $144 a night (Florham Park location). This package offers a complimentary wine or sparkling water bottle and a $10 amenity credit. For those who want a more luxurious experience, the Napa Valley location presents the “Mom’s Wine Country Getaway” bundle. It features various delights, including complimentary Wi-Fi, a bathrobe and slippers, a flat-screen TV with premium channels, and homemade salted caramels.

However, the beauty of a momcation lies in its simplicity, and many mothers find solace in a night or two spent ordering room service and donning a hotel bathrobe, even if it’s just down the block. Whether opting for an affordable escape or splurging on a more luxurious experience, the essence of a momcation is about providing mothers with the space and time to recharge and reset away from their daily responsibilities.
